The SØREN designs Story

As told by founder Bex Russell

What inspired you to create  SØREN designs?

I've always been inspired by the simplicity and clean lines of Danish design, mixed with a love of muted colours and an architectural edge. I never intended to run my own business, it organically grew around a young family and lots of pop-up's!

Where did your love for interiors come from?

My love of interiors was probably an inevitable part of growing up, my father was an architect and an artist, my mother a black and white photographer, both of whom instilled in me a passion for experiencing other cultures. I was born in Africa and have traveled extensively in India and South America.

Which brands do you like to work with and why?

I love working with independent brands that have an interesting story behind them. From Weaver Green, who are so relevant today; making the most beautiful rugs, blankets, bags and cushions from recycled plastic bottles, to Raine & Humble who have supported three generations of cotton producers in India; schooling their children and making sure all the feathers used in their cushions are the bi-product of the meat industry.

Why is it important to you as a designer and retailer to be working with small / independent brands?

There is both a story and an ethical leaning behind the brands that I chose. This in turn has fostered a personal relationship, one based on shared ethical values and mutual respect for one another. I have over time got to know all of the people behind the brands that SØREN designs is involved with, I can pick up the phone and talk to someone I know and trust. I can only sell the brands that I believe in.
